7 000 000 000

A project curated by David Arlandis and Javier Marroquí
The basis for the project 7,000,000,000 is the idea of sustainable development. This concept was first introduced in a UN report published under the symbolic name of “Our Common Future”. This report defined sustainable development as one that “meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs” and, to this end, any plan of action would require working in three areas: economic sustainability, social sustainability and environmental sustainability, what has been called the triangle of sustainability.

There is no doubt that, since then, the idea of sustainable development is part of the political agenda of official institutions of any size and for the politics deployed by citizens through more or less complex networks of collective and even individual initiatives. However, there has been a perversion in the use of this expression, and, at once, it is becoming more obvious that the current system will not be able to evolve positively or respond to the demands arising both on a local and on a global level. This is why there is a need to put forward other models for development that are more sustainable and based on a wider understanding of human activity.

7 000 000 000 makes reference to the estimated number of people inhabiting the world, since the problem of sustainable development involves everybody, both individually and collectively, and it includes all aspects of their lives. This is true to the extent that we can state, negatively, that the domination of the population by power reaches life itself. But, at the same time, positively, resistance is also part of the development of the lives of the 7,000,000,000 inhabitants of the planet. Therefore, all aspects of life are interrelated; they are all part of the great production theatre of our contemporaneity, and it is within this very space where the possibility for creative uprising is also produced.
