The Sharits exhibition has an element of documentary record and another of research, inasmuch as it attempts to recover the memory of one of the main art practitioners from the 1960s and 1970s, looking at his contributions to the study of cinema as a medium, his trespassing of borders and approach to other media, and for the influence his work exerted on his contemporaries and on artists from later generations.
The show focuses on two concepts Sharits developed: the flicker film (alternate passages of colour fields and photographic images), and the locational film, a number of works in which the artist explores the material features of the film and the mechanics of cinema in spatial terms through the use of site-specific installations, multiple projections and uninterrupted projections with no fixed duration.
The active involvement Sharits demands from the spectator, and as a consequence a valuation of spaces traditionally associated with visual arts for the presentation of his works (galleries, museums), confer meaning to this show’s attempt to revaluate the museum space as an open and multidisciplinary setting where connections are naturally established and the spectator is an active agent.
