Artistic and political uses of the mask

Workshop by Manon de Boer (with Latifa Laâbissi)

FREE ENTRY. Collaborates: Escola d´Art i Superior de Disseny de Castelló
For about three years, Manon de Boer, audiovisual artist, and Latifaa Laâbissi, performer and choreographer, work together for something that they do not know exactly what is going to be. They began to dialogue on the basis of a reciprocal interest in their practices, but forced the process they started to break with work and production habits. It was about changing the pace, abandoning long-term planning and not having particular expectations of result. As part of their work process, the artists have been recording their meetings. With this, Manon de Boer, who usually sits behind the camera, is now in front, having to deal for the first time with the appearance of the own image within the field of vision.

The mask, an object that goes through the work of Latifa Laâbissi in multiple ways and that is part of the joint research of the artists, becomes then a tool to stand the own image. The mask goes from being an object of study to be a work resource. Providing a mask is an inserted exercise that guarantees the continuity of the conversation between the artists.
The first day of the workshop it will be projected Resonating Surfaces a triple portrait: that of a city (Sao Paulo), that of a woman and that of a vital attitude. The personal history of Suely Rolnik, a psychoanalyst who lives in Sao Paulo, recovers the Brazilian dictatorship of the sixties and her exile in Paris, where she developed friendship with Deleuze and Guattari, and was related to the Parisian intellectual circles of the seventies. The film connects themes such as the relationship between body and power, voice from vulnerability and the micropolitics of desire and resistance. In this work a "resonant surface" can be at the same time, an urban fabric, a film and the body as plates sensitive to the world. The film introduces many of the aspects that will emerge during the workshop.
On the second day a series of masks will be performed and they will remain in EACC exhibition.

Manon de Boer completed her artistic education at Akademie Van Beeldende Kunsten, Rotterdam and at Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam. Using personal narration and musical interpretation as method and theme, de Boer explores the relationship between language, time, and truth claims to produce a series of filmed portraits within which the audiovisual medium is continually interrogated. Her work has been internationally exhibited at Venice Biennale (2007), at Berlin Biennale (2008), at Sao Paulo Biennale (2010), Documenta (2012), at Taipei Biennale (2016) and has been included in numerous film festivals in Hong Kong, Marseille, Rotterdam and Vienna. Her work has been matter of monographic exhibitions at Witte de With in Rotterdam (2008), Frankfurter Kunstverein (2008), South London Gallery (2010), Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de St Louis (2011), Philadelphia Museum of Art (2012), Van Abbe Museum, NL (2013), Secession Vienna (2016) and Groundwork, GB (2018) among others. De Boer currently teaches at École de Recherche Graphique in Brussels, where she lives.

Intertwining genres and redefining formats, Latifa Laâbissi's creations make a multiple out-of-field on stage, in which figures and voices are cut out. The setting of the voice and the face as vehicle of minority states becomes indisociable from the act danced in Self portrait camouflage (2006) and Loredreamsong (2010). Extending her reflection around the file, she creates Écran somnambule and La part du rite (2012) about the twenties German dance. Her creation Pourvu qu’on ait l’ivresse (2016), co-signed with  Nadia Lauro, produces visions of landscapes and images in which the excess, the outrageous, the beauty, the random, the humorous and the horror are intersected. Since 2011, Laâbissi is artistic director of Extension sauvage, artistic and pedagogical programme in rural settings (Brittany). She was associated artist until 2019 at CCN2 –Centre Choreographique National de Grenoble– and at Triangle –Cité de la dance, Rennes.

Latifa Laâbissi’s work is part of the workshop and the artist has taken part in defining it but she will not be present.
